This past week, my entire household was sick. I’m not kidding. And of course, I caught the nasty bug. Onset the sniffles, coughing, constant sneezing, and body aches. Immediately I started with my favorite cold home remedies before reaching for the medicine cabinet.
I know, sounds disgusting. But garlic is full of antibacterial properties and has been used for thousands of years for it’s healing properties.
Peel three cloves of garlic. Place them in a tea pot and fill with water. Let it boil and then drink up!
Oh, man is this a miracle vitamin. Vitamin C is vital to our bodies, especially when we are sick. Currently, I’m fighting a nasty cold and immediately popped some vitamin c. It helps boost your immune system. So pick some up here or at your local store!
Gargle with warm salt water
Usually when I have a cold, my throat kills. A good thing that I have learned is the benefits of gargling with warm salt water. I like to use sea salt. This will help soothe a sore throat and it also helps with icky cold breath.
I am a big believer in holistic health and diffusing essential oils. A great combination for a cold is lemon, peppermint, and tea tree. My whole house was complaining about stuffy sinus cavities this week so I diffused these oils. And gratefully, the combination helped clear some of it up! I recommend the Edens Garden Collection.
2 drops of lemon
3 drops of tea tree
4 drops of peppermint
Being congested as well as having body aches sucks. A great blend for chest congestion is coconut oil, peppermint oil, and Frankincense oil. Here’s what you do:
Small glass/plastic container
1 teaspoon of coconut oil
4 drops of peppermint
2 drops of frankincense
Mix together and immediately rub on chest. Avoid contact with face. This mixture really helps my mom and her fiancée during flu season!
If you have tried yoga, you know why I am recommending this. Practicing some gentle yoga while you are sick can be just what the body needs. Yoga helps your body eliminate toxins and relaxes your muscles. Try it out and follow along with Yoga with Adriene on YouTube.
Peppermint and Ginger Tea
Did you know that Peppermint helps clear your respiratory track and that ginger helps with inflammation? When I have a cold,I like to drink one cup of peppermint tea in the morning and one cup of ginger after dinner. This definitely is a lifesaver when fighting a chest cold!
Have you tried any of these home remedies for a cold? Do you recommend any others??
